Fridge Warm but Freezer Cold
A freezer full of solid ice cream above a fridge full of warm milk seems contradictory — but it is actually the most common single fault pattern in refrigerator repair, and a revealing one. In most refrigerators all the cold is produced in the freezer, and the fresh food section merely borrows it through a fan and an air channel. When the freezer is cold but the fridge is not, the cooling system itself is healthy; the delivery of cold air has failed.
Common Symptoms
- • Freezer at normal temperature while fridge reads warm
- • No airflow felt from the vents in the fresh food section
- • Fan noise stops when the freezer door opens (normal) but never resumes
- • Sheet of ice on the freezer back wall
- • Fridge slowly warms over days rather than suddenly

Common Causes
Three components deliver freezer cold to the fridge: the evaporator fan that moves the air, the damper that meters it, and the defrost system that keeps the airway ice-free. A silent fan means the motor has failed. A gradual warm-up with an icy back wall means defrost has failed and ice is choking the coils. A fridge that swings between fine and warm points at a damper sticking or a thermistor misreporting.
How Cold Air Reaches the Fresh Food Section
In most household refrigerators a single evaporator in the freezer produces all the cold air, and a small fan behind the freezer panel pushes part of it through a duct into the fresh food compartment. If that fan motor dies, the freezer stays cold by proximity — but the fridge section has lost its only supply of cold air and warms over several hours.
The defrost system protects that same airway. Every few hours a heater melts the frost that normally forms on the evaporator coils. When the heater, defrost thermostat, or control fails, frost accumulates cycle after cycle into a solid block of ice that smothers the coils and seals the duct — the fridge then warms gradually over days, and a tell-tale ice sheet often appears on the freezer back wall.
Between the two compartments sits an air damper — a motorized flap that opens and closes to hold the fridge at its set temperature. A damper stuck closed starves the fridge of air, while a faulty thermistor can convince the control board the fridge is already cold, so it never opens the damper or runs the fan at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my freezer cold but my fridge warm?
The cold air made in the freezer is not reaching the fridge. The usual culprits are a failed evaporator fan, evaporator coils encased in ice after a defrost failure, or an air damper stuck closed.
Will unplugging the fridge for a day fix it?
If ice buildup is the cause, a 24–48 hour defrost restores cooling — temporarily. The failed defrost component is still broken, and the ice returns within one to two weeks until it is replaced.
How do I know if the evaporator fan is bad?
With the compressor running you should hear a soft fan behind the freezer panel, and feel air at the fridge vents. Silence and no airflow — or a loud scraping where the fan runs — point to the fan motor.
Is this the same problem as a refrigerator not cooling at all?
No — when both compartments are warm, the fault is usually in the compressor, condenser, or sealed system. A cold freezer with a warm fridge specifically means cold is being made but not delivered.
