Common Causes

The cubes themselves are the best diagnostic. Small or hollow cubes mean the mold is not getting enough water — a saturated filter, a half-frozen fill tube, or a weak inlet valve. No cubes at all with an empty mold means water is fully blocked or the valve dead. A full mold that never dumps points at the ice maker module or a freezer too warm to finish the freeze. And ice that exists but will not dispense is usually just clumped cubes jamming the auger.

How Ice Makers Fail

Ice production starts with water pressure. Every glass of dispensed water and every ice cycle pulls through the same filter, and as it saturates, the flow into the ice mold shrinks — cubes get smaller and hollower for weeks before production stops entirely. A filter overdue by months is the single most common ice maker complaint, fixed in five minutes.

The fill tube that drops water into the mold runs through freezer air, and any drip left by a weak valve or a pressure dip freezes inside it. The ice builds until the tube closes completely — after which the mold gets no water at all. Thawing the tube restores ice, but unless the weeping valve behind it is replaced, the tube refreezes on schedule.

When water provably reaches a full mold and cubes still never drop, the ice maker module itself — thermostat, ejector motor, or control — has failed, and modern practice is to replace the unit as an assembly. Freezer temperature matters here too: above roughly 10°F the harvest thermostat never trips, so a warm freezer silently stops ice production before it affects anything else.
