Common Causes

Location and timing identify the source. Noise from inside the freezer that stops when the door opens is the evaporator fan — either its bearings are failing or its blades are scraping frost from a defrost problem. Noise from the back near the floor is the condenser fan or compressor. A click every few minutes is the start relay repeatedly failing to start the compressor — the one sound that demands urgent attention, because the fridge is not cooling between clicks.

What Different Refrigerator Noises Mean

The evaporator fan sits behind the freezer wall, and most freezers cut it off whenever the door opens — which makes diagnosis easy: a squeal, chirp, or scrape that stops instantly when you open the freezer door is that fan. Worn bearings make it noisy; frost from a failing defrost system makes the blades physically scrape ice, tying the noise to a bigger problem.

At the back of the cabinet, the condenser fan pulls air across the coils and over the drain pan. Dust mats, pet hair, or a stray piece of debris against the blades turn it into a buzzing, rattling nuisance, and its bearings wear like any fan’s. Because it shares the compressor’s compartment, its rattle is often blamed on the compressor itself.

The compressor produces the baseline hum, which grows louder as internal parts wear over years. The sound that matters most is the click-and-silence cycle: the start relay attempting to start a compressor that will not run, clicking every two to five minutes. Between clicks, no cooling happens — a refrigerator doing this is on its way to a warm cabinet within hours.
