Refrigerator Leaking Water

Common Causes

Location tells the story. Water inside the fridge — especially under the crispers — is defrost meltwater that cannot exit through a clogged or frozen drain. A sheet of ice on the freezer floor is the same problem one stage earlier. Water on the kitchen floor points outside the cabinet: the supply line, the inlet valve, or a drain pan that is cracked or tipped by unlevel installation. Leaks tied to dispenser use implicate the supply side specifically.

Where Refrigerator Water Leaks Come From

Every frost-free refrigerator melts the frost off its evaporator several times a day, and the meltwater runs through a small drain hole down to an evaporation pan by the compressor. Food debris and ice plug this drain readily; the meltwater then backs up, freezes into a sheet on the freezer floor, and eventually escapes forward — surfacing as the classic puddle beneath the crisper drawers.

The water supply side is the other main source. A quarter-inch line runs from the household supply, through an electric inlet valve at the back of the fridge, up to the ice maker and dispenser. Compression fittings loosen, plastic lines crack with age, and valve bodies weep — producing a slow drip behind the refrigerator that shows up as a spreading floor stain or warped flooring long before anyone sees the drip itself.

The drain pan itself rarely gets attention: it collects all defrost water and relies on compressor warmth to evaporate it. A cracked pan drips straight to the floor, and a refrigerator standing off-level can slosh an intact pan past its rim — one reason a leak sometimes appears right after a fridge is moved for cleaning.
